Rappelz Review

Rappelz is a free-to-play, dark fantasy Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) from Gala Lab and Webzen. It features classic characteristics of the genre together with an extensive pet system, a unique approach to dungeoning and an interesting class leveling method.

The character creation process is quick with a small number of available options; however, there are three races to choose from and each one is better fit for a specific combat role. For example, the Devas are focused on magical healing and defensive upgrades whereas the Asuras are inclined towards offense and natural power. Each race offers three Jobs (classes), a Warrior (tanking, dps), a Summoner (buffing, healing and pet summoning) and the Magician (magical attacks and spells in general). Players choose their Job at level 10, can get a specialization at level 50 and finally become Masters of their class in higher levels.

Questing rewards you with a huge amount of gear that can be upgraded, experience points and Job points; they can be used to upgrade your level or your skills. The world of Rappelz is huge with many different locations to visit; there is even an island dedicated solely to training your character and learning the game’s basics!

A notable feature of Rappelz is its pet system. Almost every mob encountered can be tamed to become your follower; pets can be trained, gain experience, have upgradable skills and can even be equipped with armor and weapons! Note that they have three stages of evolution! In general, pet breeding involves a lot of thinking and strategic planning.

And then, there is the dungeon system. In Rappelz, you can’t just go to the entrance of a dungeon and get in; you have to either own the dungeon or pay a fee to the guild that owns it! That’s right, in this game, guilds don’t fight over territory or resources; instead, they battle for ownership of dungeons! To claim a dungeon, you must first defeat every other contestant in a timed attack raid and then face the owner in a Guild vs Guild event called Dungeon Siege! Add to the above, typical PVP content like duels and arenas and you have a complete and intense PVP experience.

To sum things up, Rappelz is a title that offers some unique features that try to compensate for weaknesses like rather outdated graphics, mindless grinding and uninteresting story. It’s surely worth giving a try but you shouldn’t have high expectations or you will be disappointed.
