Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is a Trading Card Game (TCG) from CD PROJECT and is heavily based on the Gwent game which is integrated in the Witcher 3 title.

There are five available factions to play and each one has a passive trait, for example, Monsters receive an attack bonus from bad weather. What is more, certain cards have special synergies when played together allowing for new possibilities in gameplay. The basic stat is strength, but there is a classification with bronze, silver and gold cards with the latter being almost invincible.

The game is played through three rounds with the winner being the first to beat his opponent two times. Players construct a deck of at least 25 cards and draw 10; they can also draw two more at the beginning of the second round and an additional one at the third round, if there is one. There are three rows on the game board, for melee, ranged and siege units respectively. Opponents must use their cards wisely to take advantage of any given bonuses and to exploit their enemies’ weaknesses. Since there is a limited amount of cards to play, strategical thinking and planning ahead is necessary; sometimes it’s good to know when not to use your entire arsenal and just quit this round to come back stronger in the next.

Victories earn you ore, the in-game currency, which can be used to buy new cards; you can also destroy cards you don’t care for and create new ones or finally, buy some with real money. Opening a booster pack (or Keg) will give you four random cards and a fifth one that you can choose from a selection of three possible ones. Your cards earn experience with every victorious battle, rise in rank and may reach the ultimate golden status. On the presentation side, the game looks great with excellent 2D artworks and scarce but very well designed animations.

In conclusion, this is a title that offers a fresh approach to the TCG genre with some original and very well-designed mechanics; if you have enjoyed the Gwent game in Witcher 3 or you just love this kind of games, you shouldn’t miss Gwent: The Witcher Card Game!

It was back at 1996 when Theodoros bought his first Personal Computer and with it a copy of Shogun : Total War. That was the beginning of many sleepless nights of exploring the fantastic world of gaming. He calls himself an “expert” defender and that’s his favorite gameplay style but he will not hesitate to grab a shield and go forth to protect his team as a tank. So next time you adventure in Azeroth and see a shield bearing cow named Klaras, you have found our guy! He is also a great fan of Role Playing Games. From Icewind Dale to Neverwinter Nights and Skyrim, you name it, he has played it all! He is not your average casual gamer, he is a dedicated fan!
