Dragon Awaken Review

Dragon Awaken is a free-to-play, fantasy, browser game. Created and produced by FreeGame, it uses the all-too-popular Chinese browser game model.

One resides in a persisting gaming hub and moves outside when ready to do some quests. Said quests feature a plethora of NPCs, packed in groups, that the player faces by means of a completely automated combat system. The outcome of the combat is decided by a statistical comparison between the player’s units and the opposing ones. It’s a glorified clicker.

The game looks and feels quite well. Also the sound isn’t terrible. It is, however, not interesting at all, especially if one has already played one of the other thousands of similar titles.

Not to mention the usual sloppy translations, starting from the name. What does “Dragon Awaken” mean? English just doesn’t function that way: nobody says “War Fought”, or “Glass Drank”. It could be “Dragons Awaken”, or “Dragon Awakens”, but the developers have obviously thought that poor English might be a selling point.

The game features some unique elements, like the ability to grow and tame a Dragon, or a classless system that gives players more freedom of choice as far as class customization goes. Furthermore, the heroes seem to be taken from Asian history and mythology. But I wonder how can such things matter when, in fact, all these features are is just different drawing playing out animations slapped on a gaming engine that is copied and pasted from a pre-established and overused model, which happens to be quite bad to begin with?
