BlackShot is an FPS game that was developed by Vertigo games and was published by Papaya Play in April 2009. The game takes place in the distant future were cloning is being performed on humans by big corporations and they become mercenaries that are deployed against each other.

When starting out there are four characters to choose from: Travis, Vanessa, Adam and Cathy. Travis and Vanessa have speed as their primary attribute and they start with a M16A1 weapon, whereas Adam and Cathy specialize in defence and their starting weapon is a MP5.

The gameplay is similar to other FPS games and it is something that will surely provide a sense of familiarity to fans of this genre. There is a multitude of guns to choose from like pistols, rifles, sniper rifles and so on. Sprinting is not present in the game and like Counter Strike if you have your knife equipped you move faster.

The modes available in BlackShot are Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Plant/defuse the bomb, Bunker Defence and Protect the Commander. Apart from the usual first game modes, Bunker Defence is the PvE mode and the new element that the game brings to the table is Protect the Commander. In this case one of the players in each team becomes the Commander, chosen randomly by the game and the goal is for the opposing team to kill him in order to win.

Apart from the starting weapons players may rent other weapons from the store by using either Bounty Points or Bounty Cash. As you may have guessed Bounty Points are earned by playing the game and are a bit harder to accumulate whereas Bounty Cash is the currency of paying with real money to get something faster. The good thing here is the fact that if you rent a gun it only counts the time used and the timer does not go down if you have it laying in your inventory. The store also includes tactics which increase player stats and cosmetics which change the appearance of your character.

All in all even though BlackShot has been around for quite some time it can provide its dose of fun, provided that you enjoy first person shooters. It does have its flaws with the store, but fortunately gives the alternative of grinding the points required to buy things at the store.

Growing up I had the luck to encounter the art of video games at a very young age in South Africa in 1990. I was captivated from the first moment I played video games from the educational math games at school to the purely entertaining video games at home. This love cultivated in studying Audio and Visual Arts, where I created the interactive audiovisual play in the form of a video game titled "The Life of Death". Over the last few years I have also been a videogame journalist as a hobby. Recently, I completed my Postgraduate studies in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. My goal is to get into the video games industry and be a part of the creation process of video games.
