Eight powerful wizards, one shared goal – total magical domination! In Frogsong Studios AB’s, Spellsworn, you and up to seven other powerful wizards get the chance to pit yourselves against one another in five rounds of tactical and strategic magical combat. Sling spells from one of five diverse schools of magic, gain new weapons and skins through combat experience, and outsmart your enemies – alone or with a friend, in one of four separate PvP game modes.

In Spellsworn, the battle arena you play upon is as much a threat as any of of your enemy players. With the edge of play constantly encroaching, you and your fellow competitors must simultaneously manage to avoid being pushed into the highly damaging lava – while also attempting to ensure that you victory by maneuvering and manipulating your enemies – in the hopes to potentially give them a little nudge in turn! There are of course other ways to impart damage unto your enemies in Spellsworn, but the mere fact that tactical positioning and clever use of push spells can path a player the path to victory is an immense design accomplishment in and of itself. Spellsworn manages to do things with its combat that I have not seen even attempted in an arena battle game in at least a decade, and it does it almost flawlessly.

In Spellsworn, the PvP game modes are split into four distinct branches of gameplay. There’s the 1v1 setting, where you and another wizard are pitted against one another in head to head combat. 2v2, where you and a friend take on another pair. 3v3, where, you guessed it, you and two pals take on another team of three. And then there’s Free For All. While the team based modes are a lot of fun, especially if you have some friends to play with, Free For All is where Spellsworn truly shines. Eight independent wizards, all equipped with their own special combination of spells and tactics, all looking to come out ahead of you, and impending doom just outside of the maps edge. Utter magical chaos – and true gaming bliss.

After the match, Spellsworn doesn’t let up in it’s excitement. There are tons of unique and interesting weapons and skins to gather up in order to show off during your next fight. This along with the intense drive that one might experience to be the best wizard around, is more than enough incentive for anyone to have a fantastic time playing this game. Spellsworn aims to deliver a gaming experience unlike anything I’ve seen in recent years – and is the only good reimagining of the old Warlock mod that I have ever had the pleasure to come across. To not give Spellsworn a chance, especially with the price tag on it of free, would be an egregious mistake – and one that I urge no one reading this review to make.

A writer of fiction and lover of all things fantastical, Matthew has spent many of his days immersed in one created world or another, be they an MMO, traditional video game, or a work of literary fiction. Having been both an avid writer and video game lover for his entire life, the next logical step seemed to be, you guess it, writing about video games. And so here he is, doing that.
