Closers is a Free to Play Side Scrolling MMORPG brought to us by En Masse Entertainment, in which you, a psychically gifted high school student is tasked by The World Government with the job saving humanity as we know it. Right off the bat, you will select your character from a fairly wide selection of classes. Unfortunately there is limited character customization from the get go, but that is quickly remedied by the fact that you will soon begin to accumulate both cosmetic pieces, and currency with which to purchase them in the future from the in game shop.

Featuring 3D graphics heavily influenced by popular anime, and a combat style similar to that of other fighting games we’ve seen, such as Guilty Gear, or Injustice 2, Closers works hard to put it’s players right into the heat of the battle from the get go, and to never let off the gas pedal for even a moment.

Closers combat style is an effective combination of button mashing and combo stringing, along with a hearty supply of supplemental special moves to keep things feeling fresh and interesting. The only qualm I have with this combat style, at least as far as PvE is concerned, is that things can become very easy very fast. That is to say, once you as a player have determined what exactly the enemy AI is going to do, it can become a trivial task to avoid and punish. This, coupled with Closers somewhat iffy storytelling, make for a PvE experience that can become simultaneously very grindy, and very repetitive… Don’t let that discourage you, though, as there is a lot more to this game than the PvE!

Thankfully, Closers boasts a fairly engaging, and most of all rewarding Player versus Player experience. Comprised of both 3v3 and 1v1 arenas, as well a 4v4 MOBA-esque mode, Closers’ PvP experience is both heart pumping and intellectually stimulating – which is pretty much the goal for combo based, counter-attack oriented games such as this. The only negative light that can be cast on the PvP content that Closers provides is that some of the classes are still somewhat unbalanced in terms of both damage, and overall reliability. This same could be said of most MMO games out there though, and with any luck En Masse Entertainment will have that all sorted out before too long.

All said and done, Closers offers fans of the Beat ‘Em Up MMORPG genre a comfortable world in which to spend their days inhabiting, filled with fast paced PvE encounters, heart racing PvP arenas, and just enough personal customization that you don’t feel like you are identical to the rest of the players using your chosen class. In a game where skill based combos and well timed counter attacks are the keys to victory, it is only up to you, and you alone – to triumph.

A writer of fiction and lover of all things fantastical, Matthew has spent many of his days immersed in one created world or another, be they an MMO, traditional video game, or a work of literary fiction. Having been both an avid writer and video game lover for his entire life, the next logical step seemed to be, you guess it, writing about video games. And so here he is, doing that.
